Health and Safety Training

What is Health and Safety Training

Training can take place on the job or in a classroom, but either way it is the provision of information that allows a person to carry out a task or activity in a safe and healthy manner.

Why should I provide Health and Safety Training?

One reason for providing training to your employees is your legal obligation to protect the health and safety of your employees. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 expand on the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, identifying situations where health and safety training is particularly important e.g. inductions for new starters, information regarding exposure to new or increased risks in the workplace, and refresher training for employees who may require their skills updating. However, providing health and safety information and training can also help to develop a positive health and safety culture, where safe and healthy working becomes second nature to everyone due to the fact that you have ensured that the people who work for you know how to work safely and without risks to health.

Who needs health and safety training?

Whether you are an employer or self-employed, you need to ensure that you are up to date with how to identify the hazards and control the risks from your work. However, the amount of training you need depends on the level of competent advice and support you have from an internal or external Health and Safety Consultant.

Your Managers and Supervisors also need health and safety training. Your management team need to know what you expect from them in terms of health and safety and how you expect them to deliver. They need to understand your health and safety policy, their roles and responsibilities, and how you want health and safety managed. They may also need training in the specific hazards of your processes and how you expect the risks to be controlled.

Everyone who works for you, including self-employed people, needs to know how to work safely and in a healthy manner. They need to know about your health and safety policy, your arrangements for implementing it, and the part they play. Everyone should be aware of how they can raise any health and safety concerns within the organisation and how those concerns may be addressed.

You may also want to consider whether any Contractors or self-employed persons working for you need training in the safety systems that you have put in place for regular employees. They will need to be aware of your working environment and the hazards associated with the activities undertaken by your organisation.
